Icon After Icon is a contemporary interpretation of ancient iconography.  The Russian collective describe their work as not being reproductions of the classical works, or simply a modern nod to the style, but Traditional Contemporary Art.  The work is created with various mediums – wood, stone, textiles, graffiti, mosaics, frescos and stickers – to form devotional works of art.  Curator Anton Belikov states: “Our project is made to restart the traditional religious art as a contemporary one, to make a step forward from the numerous replicas of ancient masterpieces.  We don’t want our art to look fake ancient. We want it to be Traditional Contemporary Art…the idea is to reinvent the icon as a modern art object.
It is a project between the past and the future, between ancient and contemporary art.”

The variety of interpretations of iconography are drawing attention for their innovation.  See more artwork below and visit the Icon After Icon instagram.
